Material: SA 516 Gr. 70

This 220 mm thick hemispherical head represents a first-of-its-kind fabrication in India, successfully manufactured using hot forming method. The component is formed by uniformly heating a solid steel plate to the required forming temperature and shaping it into a true hemispherical profile using specially designed tools on the heavy-duty press machine. The process achieves controlled deformation, consistent wall thickness, precise geometry, and enhanced metallurgical integrity, demonstrating indigenous capability for manufacturing ultra-thick hemispherical heads for critical industrial applications.

In 2023, a customer approached us for a refinery sulphur recovery unit (SRU) project with an approved delivery timeline of 6 months. Understanding the urgency and critical nature of the requirement, Motilal accepted the challenge with full confidence and commitment. Through efficient planning, advanced forming techniques, and round-the-clock execution, we successfully manufactured and delivered the reducer cone in just 45 days. The conical shell is formed by hot forming individual thick plate segments, which are uniformly heated and shaped to the specified conical geometry using specially designed forming tools on a high-capacity press machine. The controlled forming process and precision tooling ensure accurate segment curvature, consistent thickness, and proper fit-up for subsequent assembly into the complete cone.

2:1 Ellipsoidal Dished End in Crown and Petals

6500 mm ID X 30+3 mm Thk

The 2:1 ellipsoidal dished end is manufactured by a cold forming process from SA 387 Grade 22 base material with SS 347 stainless steel cladding. The dished end is produced in a segmented construction comprising a central crown and radially arranged petal segments. The crown and individual petals are cold formed to the required curvature, ensuring accurate ellipsoidal geometry and controlled deformation without compromising cladding integrity.

The eccentric cone is manufactured by a controlled cold forming process from SA 516 Grade 70 steel plate. The plate is cold formed to the specified eccentric conical geometry using purpose-designed forming tools and fixtures, ensuring controlled deformation, thickness of 117 mm, and accurate dimensional conformity. The cold forming process preserves material properties and provides a smooth profile suitable for subsequent fabrication and pressure vessel service in accordance with applicable Code requirements.

Hemispherical Heads Under U-Certification

84” ID X 7 mm thk & 79” mm OD X 7 mm thk

Hemispherical heads manufactured under ASME U certification, fabricated from SA 517 Grade B quenched‑and‑tempered ferritic alloy steel. The material’s elevated strength is a primary feature of the grade and is intended for pressure‑vessel applications; for example, A517 Grade B is specified for fusion‑welded boilers and pressure vessels and has minimum yield strength around 100 ksi, highlighting its high‑strength character. The heads are formed by controlled cold forming in segments, enabling tight dimensional control and smooth geometry while accommodating the mechanical demands of this high‑strength alloy.
